Pencil techniques

Watercolour pencils are really versatile and easy to use, the great thing about them is that you have so much control over your painting. They allow you to draw details in then apply water to transform the drawing into a watercolour style painting.

Here are a few different techniques you can use to make the most of your watercolour pencils. The simple way of using them is to draw out your design with the pencils then paint the water on top with a wet brush, the colour will start to spread with the water and you can use the brush to pull the colours around the page. This will remove the scratchy pencil lines and create a nice watercolour look.

You can also use the pencils as tho they are a paint palette, by taking the colour with a wet brush directly from the pencil led. Then painting with the brush onto the paper.

Blend colours together by drawing in layers then adding water to spread the colour into one another. You can press down harder to get a deeper colour or softly to get more of a light wash.
